The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, including five starts.

When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a key Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.

At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.

He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and awarded him minutes in pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing football, each day you go to train and each day you play a match," said the player following his debut.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his age and experience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His standout trait is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to perform his normal game.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive senior international match.

He has featured for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion soon."

This scenario echoes that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While teenage Lamine chose Spain, Diaz decided to represent Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the team pursue future success.

After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he said after the success at Manchester.
