In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
