NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his campaign.

A Historic Residence

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key platform, was not quick to announce he would live there promptly following his electoral win in November.

"My choice came down to our family's safety and the imperative to focusing my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability the city's residents voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in Astoria, Queens, a community known for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will continue to reside within me and my work," he said.

Political Debate

In his election campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his critics, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the affordable housing although he is from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a space for public city functions, and advocated for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his humble Astoria digs.

With its butter yellow paint, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

His former home is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the price of rent exceeds the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
