LeBron James was aware his historic run of putting up 10+ points was threatened. At the decisive instant, however, it was not his focus.
The right decision meant distributing the basketball – which is exactly what he did. Consequently, his remarkable run came to an end.
James's astounding streak of over 1,200 straight regular-season double-digit scoring performances was snapped on Thursday night, when the league's career points king had only eight points in the Los Angeles Lakers' 123-120 triumph versus Toronto. He provided the clutch helper, setting up teammate Rui Hachimura for a triple to win the game.
“None,” James replied when asked regarding the conclusion of his run. “We won.”
James could have sought to clinch the contest – and extended his record – on the final possession, but he chose to dish the ball to Hachimura in the left corner. Hachimura made the shot, and James raised his arms immediately.
You have to play the game the proper way. You always make the correct play,” James noted. “That’s just been how I operate. That is the way I was instructed the game. I've played that way for two decades.”
James is very conscious exactly how many points he has at all times,” commented Lakers coach JJ Redick. He acted like he’s done countless times.”
James re-entered the contest one last time with under five and a half minutes to go, the win along with the historic run both hanging in the balance. At that stage, he had only six points on 3 for 15 from the field then.
He scored with 1:46 left to tie the game then missed a mid-range jumper at one minute to go that would have taken him to ten points.
He avoided taking one more attempt – but could have. A teammate found him as time wound down, however, James chose to make the extra pass instead.
The spirits of the game, if you approach it correctly, they often reward you,” Redick added.
The record started back in January 2007. It stood as the most extended streak of its kind in professional basketball: Michael Jordan had 866 straight games with 10+ points, Kareem recorded 787 such games, and The Mailman had the fourth-longest run with 575.
LeBron is such an unselfish player,” remarked teammate a fellow Laker.
He focuses on playing hoops. He could have shot but because of the player he is and his character as a person, he made the pass, passed it to Rui and we won the game.”
Reaching double digits had long been an afterthought long before the fourth quarter began. During James’s streak, he had reached the 10-point mark by the start of the fourth 1,266 times prior to Thursday.
However, two of those rare games below ten points through three quarters had happened recently: He had nine entering the final quarter versus the Mavericks on 28 November, and then had six points going into the fourth versus the Suns earlier in the week.
James managed to keep the streak alive in the Phoenix game. The very next outing, it was over – but he still rejoiced anyway.
My focus is to make the best play. That comes naturally, regardless of outcome,” James affirmed. “You make the right play, the basketball gods forever giving back to me.”
