France has agreed to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift follows the Prime Minister sent a letter to the French leader urging him to back the plan and stating there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.
French police have rarely intervened to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is considered too great a danger to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police representative says personnel will start taking action at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Significantly, the official ruled out the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential technique to disable the propellers of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a major step forward, coming after a short-lived change towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister left office.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Now French officials will once more be allowed to stop boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the start of interceptions and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for methods to adapt to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
