The England national team will embark on their UEFA Euro 2028 journey at the Etihad Stadium, provided that they attain the anticipated entry for a tournament hosted across the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.
The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an England men’s game since the spring of 2016, when the Turkish team were defeated 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is expected to stage the national team for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.
The team are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at the national stadium, but, in the event of winning their group, their round of 16 match would take place at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean commencing the elimination stage at Everton’s ground.
The tournament was launched at an event in Piccadilly Circus on the previous evening. Key representatives from Uefa and the organizing bodies were confronted as they approached the site by approximately 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who demanded the Israeli team to be kicked out from international football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Signs were raised with phrases saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
The first match of the tournament will be staged at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a game that will include Wales if they make it.
Wembley will host the two semi-final matches and the title decider, which will be played on July 9, 2028 with a commencement at 5:00 PM.
It is anticipated that an earlier kick-off, which will also be used for Champions League finals from the following campaign, will cater to family audiences and help reach a broader range of viewers.
The Republic of Ireland are scheduled to play their opening match at the Dublin Arena and the Tartan Army would play similarly at the national stadium of Scotland.
Each host nation’s squad will enter the qualification process; two reserved places will be reserved for any that miss out on the tournament through the standard process.
Villa Park and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine tournament locations. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarterfinal matches played at the national stadium of each host.
The qualification draw will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was removed as a host city last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be redeveloped in time, on a date in late 2026.
“The event will be a competition for the supporters and a showcase of everything we love about the sport – its passion and ability to bring people together.”
In excess of three million admissions, a record for a men’s European Championship, are anticipated to be released to attendees.
