The deceased of a 34-year-old woman and her young daughter, 10 have been located inside freezing appliances in an residence in the western part of Austria.
The victims, a Syrian woman and her daughter, who had been missing for several months, were uncovered on Friday. The cooling units were placed behind a plasterboard wall in the flat, situated in the city of Innsbruck.
Two individuals, a 55-year-old Austrian and his 53-year-old brother, were taken into custody in the month of June. The 55-year-old, a work associate of the Syrian woman, stated to police last week that there had been an accident—but rejected intentional killing.
Addressing journalists previously, a spokesman for the state prosecutor said the two suspects were being held on "serious suspicion of murder".
Personal details of those implicated have not been released by authorities, in compliance with local legislation.
The family's disappearance was first reported by the female victim's relative, who lives in Germany, on 25 July 2024.
Investigators said the woman's colleague claimed at the time she had gone on an prolonged visit with her daughter to see her family in Turkey.
Her bank card was then discovered to be utilized in foreign locations several times.
Yet when police searched the victim's residence, her mobile phone was located.
A witness also claimed overhearing a commotion in the dwelling, and shouts of "mum" on the occasion the mother and child were thought to have disappeared.
A broader official inquiry was launched, with authorities finding various messages sent from the woman's phone—including a job termination message to her workplace and communications to the male colleague.
Officials confirmed a significant cash transfer was also sent to the man.
A senior police official stated to reporters on Tuesday that a storage facility had been rented out before the mother and child went missing and a freezing appliance had been installed within.
The male siblings removed the freezer from the unit on the very day the mother and daughter vanished, the official said. And a week later, they obtained an additional appliance.
Investigators state they consider this indicates the deaths were premeditated.
"The reason for their demise was not identifiable due to the state of decomposition of the bodies," she stated.
Mayr—of the public prosecutor's office—noted the exact sequence of events is not yet known, but the remains were carefully placed and were not found during a previous house search.
Although the suspects were taken into custody in the summer, it was not until 12 November that the suspect admitted to an event and to concealing the remains. He rejects any murderous intent, investigators confirmed.
Meanwhile, his brother admitted to a attempt to hide evidence but denied awareness of a murder.
The two suspects are at this time in pre-trial detention in jails in Innsbruck and Salzburg, approximately 189 kilometers away from each other.
Through a combined announcement, Austria's Minister for Women and the top legal representative said the "alleged double murder... constitutes the swift and cruel conclusion of a mother and child and reveals a cruel system".
"Women and girls are falling victim to homicide due to the mere fact that they are female," they went on to say.
"Gender-based killings are a deeply rooted and society-wide problem that we must address decisively."
