Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after the ex-president accused a group of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be taken into custody and sentenced "by death" following their publication of a controversial video.
The recorded message, published on Tuesday, features six Democratic congress members who in the past acted in defense or security positions.
"As we did, you all took an pledge to protect and support this constitution," the officials declared in the short video. "Currently, the risks to our governing document don't only come from abroad, but from domestically. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can reject unlawful commands, you can refuse illegal orders, you must decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow commands that break the law or our constitution."
The clip appeared to prompt a furious reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he declared: "This represents really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their comments cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats published a combined announcement censuring the remarks.
"Violent politics has no position in this nation," they declared. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all worked our country with tremendous national pride and honor. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and harmful death threats against congressional representatives, and call on House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with security officials "to make certain the protection of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these extreme social media posts and withdraw his violent discourse before he leads to violence," the announcement continued.
The representatives who participated in the video also released a declaration.
"We serve as former service members and national security professionals who value this United States and made an pledge to defend and defend the constitution of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge is permanent, and we aim to honor it. No threat, coercion, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that important obligation."
"The significant point is that the former president views it liable to punishment by death for us to restate the statutes," they stated. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their protection as they fulfill their pledge to the founding principles and duty to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "Every American must come together and condemn the former president's requests for our death and ideological conflict. This is a period for principled stance."
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's remarks and published on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is demanding the execution of public representatives."
He added: "This represents an clear THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should censure this immediately and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "It is very risky, you have prominent officials of the government advising military personnel to ignore directives, I think that is unprecedented in US history."
The Conservative representative also according to sources stated to media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the crime of sedition" but that "legal experts have to analyze the terminology and establish all that."
During a White House press conference on later that day, when questioned by a media member, "Does the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary answered: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the official declared. "We see sitting members of the US Congress who coordinated to arrange a video message to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers encouraging them to defy the president's lawful orders."
She said: "The sanctity of our military rests on the command structure, and if that chain of command is broken, it can cause fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and that's what these members of Congress ... are essentially encouraging."
