Northern Canada has been gripped by an intense and prolonged cold spell, with temperatures hovering in the minus 20 to minus 40 Celsius range for weeks. On Tuesday, Braeburn in the Yukon recorded -55.7C, its coldest December temperature since 1975.
Meanwhile, Mayo and Dawson endured 16 consecutive nights below -40C, with Mayo experiencing a low of -50.4C on Monday. The capital, Whitehorse, likewise saw ten separate nights when readings fell to minus 30 degrees or lower.
This Arctic air mass pushed further southward over the festive period. On Christmas Day, overnight temperatures in Edmonton fell below -28C.
The day after Christmas was forecast to deliver readings no higher than -20 Celsius in numerous areas, from Edmonton in the west to Quebec in the east.
The frigid conditions are predicted to linger through the start of January. There are warnings of possible electrical grid strain in Yukon territory soon, as the territory’s power grid comes under strain from historically high electricity consumption.
The prolonged chill has been caused by the Arctic vortex settling over Canada for much of December, allowing bitter Arctic air to spill south. In the coming week, forecasts indicate this cold air will pull back northward allowing more temperate air from the Pacific to sweep across the United States and penetrate southern Canadian regions.
Conversely, sections of America recorded historically high temperatures for Christmas as temperatures soared about 15-30C above the seasonal average. For numerous locations, the weather resembled a spring day in April or May instead of the heart of winter.
Several states set Christmas Day temperature records. The capital of Oklahoma soared to 25C on Christmas Day, surpassing the previous peak of 22C set in 1982. Urban centers like Austin, Dallas, and Charlotte, North Carolina similarly saw thermometers rise past the 25C mark.
Above-average warmth is expected to continue for the remainder of the week and beyond, with atypical high temperatures expected to spread across the southeastern US in the coming days.
The warmth has been fuelled by a robust atmospheric ridge reaching from the arid southwest across the continent, establishing a classic heat-dome pattern. This pattern establishes a broad area of high pressure blanketing a significant part of the landmass, effectively capping warm air at lower altitudes. Descending air compresses and adiabatically warms, allowing unusually warm temperatures to build.
