Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her American tour following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles laments the passing to a authentic original whose legacy on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
