Alleged Bondi Beach Attackers Acted Solo and Did Not Preparation in the Southeast Asian Nation, Police Confirm.
The pair of accused attackers responsible for the fatal attack at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach, resulting in 15 lives, reportedly operated independently, per Australian authorities.
Police further stated that Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram, 24, journeyed to the Philippines on 1 November. Their travel plans included arriving in the main city Manila before connecting that same day to Davao City. The father and son returned to Sydney on 29 November.
No Evidence of Training During Trip
Investigators assert the pair did not receive any form of attack-related coaching or "logistical preparation" during their stay in the Philippines. Early inquiries from Philippine authorities suggest they "rarely left" their hotel.
The shooting—described as Australia's most severe mass shooting since 1996—has been formally declared a terrorist incident.
"We are actively examining the footage," she said, adding that initial reviews indicate that "the alleged offenders are believed to have operated independently."
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett informed reporters on Tuesday that surveillance material showing the accused attackers' movements in the Philippines had been submitted to Australian authorities.
"Our investigation shows no evidence to support the idea these alleged offenders were part of a wider organization, or were directed by overseas entities to execute an attack," the police chief said.
However, the duo were additionally not necessarily in the Philippines for tourism, the official added. She underscored that, since the inquiry is ongoing, additional details might surface.
Ideology and Legal Proceedings
Previously, the nation's leader Anthony Albanese said it looks as though both accused attackers were "motivated by Islamic State" beliefs.
During the incident, Sajid Akram was killed by responding officers. He and his son Naveed—equipped with rifles—allegedly shot participants at the Hanukkah celebration.
Naveed Akram, who was injured and taken to hospital after the attack, has been charged with 59 offences. These encompass 15 counts of murder and one count of carrying out a terrorist act. He is expected to face court in April.
Immigration Particulars
In the days following the shooting, immigration authorities in the Philippines indicated that the father had entered the country using an Indian passport, while his son used an domestic passport.
The pair had declared the southern city of Davao as their intended endpoint. Their booked journey back to Australia was for Sydney.
Davao is a large metropolis on the eastern side of Mindanao, the Philippines' largest island in the south. The region is known because, Islamist fighters have reportedly be active in less developed parts of southern and western Mindanao.
