The secretary added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports said travel would be held up due to a shortage of workers - among the peak since the closure started.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second-longest halt in history.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the number of planes in the sky if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official stated.
