Afghan Rulers Utilized Abandoned UK Technology to Track Down Afghans Who Worked Alongside Allied Troops, Inquiry Hears

A whistleblower has revealed the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK abandoned sensitive equipment allowing Afghanistan's rulers to track down Afghans who worked with international military.

Information Leak Puts Numerous in Danger

The source, known as Person A, explained that Afghans affected by the data leak were instructed to move homes and change their contact details to avoid detection from militant forces.

Lawmakers are looking into the UK government's response of a catastrophic breach of private information affecting approximately 19k individuals who had requested to move to the United Kingdom to flee militant rule.

Data Disclosure Was Discovered

A data file with private information, comprising identities, addresses and in some cases relative details, was mistakenly released by a worker stationed at British military command in early 2022.

The leak came to light months later, when details of multiple applicants who had sought to settle in Britain surfaced on social media.

Militant Technology

Many believe there's a false assumption that the Taliban do not have comparable resources that we have,” Person A informed lawmakers.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they possess it. Should they obtain mobile details, they can locate your exact position. This is exactly how specialized teams did.”

When questioned about if militant forces possessed sophisticated technology, the source stated: “They've got everything.”

Consequences of the Data Breach

Early investigations provided to the committee estimated that approximately fifty family members and associates of people concerned by the breach had been murdered.

A legal restriction about the breach was enacted in late 2023 and prevented any information regarding the matter from media reporting until July 2025.

Safety Measures

Given injunction limitations, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization she was working with informed Afghan families they were assisting that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been breached”.

“We recommended that they change residence if they could and switched their mobile numbers. These represented the crucial data that, if the Taliban obtained such data, would cause them being traced,” Person A explained.

Contested Findings

The source contested that internal investigation conducted by a former official had been incorrect to state that the possession of the information by militant forces was “minimally impact present danger”.

“The important fact is that these Afghans are not confronting the Taliban; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves former occupations.”

The source explained disturbing violence suffered by at-risk Afghans, including electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.

“There are cases of young kids who have had bones crushed to force households to say where someone is,” the whistleblower revealed.
