While perhaps not at the same level as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future away from worry.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, donated by a first responder, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: joyful, varied, and based in heritage that unite the community. Every time, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and strong coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
